1 - Kick Off - 29 Jan 2016 (Munich)

The kick-off meeting of Spin-NANO will take place on 29 January 2016 at the Walter Schottky Institut in Munich and will be hosted by Friedemann Reinhard (TU Munich).

At this meeting the general information regarding implementation of the project and also recruitment strategy will be discussed in detail.

Training on gender issues will be provided by Think Ahead.

From Gender to Diversity: Considering good practices to increase diversity in recruitment, to enhance experience, success & retention

Shifting gender/ diversity in PhD recruitment in the physical sciences represent an incredibly complex challenge; however, continuing to say that it is a “wicked problem” is not helpful in shifting the agenda forward.

The intention in this session was to to challenge academics in the network to consider:

What will be the legacy of SpinNano towards Equality and Diversity?
To get academics to consider their own responsibilities in shifting practices/ research culture
To help academics reflect on their current supervisory practices that may impact the experience of researchers
To dare them to consider small actions in challenging recruitment practices that may bring different outcomes
